What is a CRX file?

Files that contain the .crx file extension are used by the Google Chrome Internet browser. Google Chrome is a browser much like the Internet Explorer browser distributed by Microsoft, but Chrome is proprietary to the Google Corporation.
The CRX files that are used by the Chrome browser contain plug-in files, also referred to as Google Chrome extension files. These files are installed onto a user's Google Chrome browser application in order to provide the user with additional features, such as custom browser skins and interactive browser functions.
CRX files are often distributed in a compressed file format, making them more manageable to distribute and download from the Internet. The files are usually compressed using Zip compression technology.
Software that will open, convert or fix CRX files
- Install an extension. Find and select the extension you want. Click Add to Chrome. Some extensions will let you know if they need certain permissions or data. To approve, click Add extension. To use the extension, click the icon to the right of the address bar. If you’re using a computer through your work or school.
