What is Lightroom?

However, Lightroom is much more than a photo editor or image editing software. Lightroom helps you import, organize, manage, and find your images. In turn, Lightroom is photo management and photo editing, combined into a single tool.
Unlike Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom is a non-destructive photo editor, meaning that you don’t have to worry about that pesky “save as” button. In fact, Lightroom has no “save” button at all. All of the edits are automatically kept in your Lightroom catalog, which acts as your database of edits and history.
When Should I Use Lightroom vs Photoshop?
If you shoot raw photos (which you should), then I recommend that you first import your photos into Lightroom as the initial step of your image management process. Lightroom is a raw file editor so you don’t need Adobe Camera Raw. Also, because of the photo management capabilities of Lightroom, you’ll be organizing your digital photography as you import.
Lightroom is perfect for most basic photo editing, including (but not limited to) cropping, white balance, exposure, histogram adjustments, tonal curves, black and white conversion, spot removal, red eye corrections, gradients, local adjustments, sharpening, noise reduction, lens profile corrections, vibrance, and saturation. If you’re comfortable in Adobe Camera Raw, then developing a photo in Lightroom will look very familiar. If you’re a beginning photographer, you’ll most likely be satisfied with these features. Lightroom is also much easier to use than Photoshop, which can have more of a steep learning curve.
Lightroom Workflow:
When it comes to workflow, I believe Lightroom blows Photoshop out of the water. With Lightroom, you can create collections, add keywords, move multiple images or files around your hard drive, create slideshows, print books, and share your photos directly to Facebook with relative ease.
As importantly, you can also copy or sync your photo edits to multiple photos at once. If you think Photoshop “Actions” are easy… They are nothing compared to the ease of using Lightroom. You can also use and create Lightroom presets to apply common settings across your photos.
So, photographers who shoot raw images in volume, whether it’s weddings, portraits, or babies, Lightroom will be a time saver.
So When Should I Use Photoshop?
The easy answer is when you can’t use Lightroom. Depending on the type of photography you do, this can be fairly often or practically never. That being said, there are a few specific areas where Photoshop actions and Photoshop elements that outperform Lightroom.
Advanced Retouching: If you want to have pixel level control to edit photos, or if you want to make an arm thinner or a person taller, Photoshop is needed.
Composites: When you want to slice and dice a couple of images to create a single awesome image, Photoshop is your answer.
HDR: Although there are some great HDR plugins available for Lightroom (Photomatix), if you want to blend images together to pull out the highlights and shadows from multiple exposures, Photoshop can do this. Note: Lightroom does this as well, but with different effect.
Panoramas: With Photoshop, you can stitch several photos together to create beautiful panoramas. Note: Lightroom does this as well, but with different effect.
Advanced Healing: While you can remove blemishes, stray hairs, whiten teeth, and remove small objects in Lightroom, the capabilities aren’t as awesome as using the content aware magic of Photoshop’s healing brush and patch tools.
So What Do I Do: Photoshop vs Lightroom?
There is no right answer. The great news is that you can certainly use both Lightroom and Photoshop together because they integrate quite well (particularly in the Creative Cloud). If you are getting started with photography, Lightroom is the place to begin. You can add Photoshop to your photo editing software later.
Both Lightroom and Photoshop are great software packages that have the ability to bring out your post-processing and post-production creativity. Just choose the right editing program for your editing photo needs on a project-by-project basis.
While many Adobe Photoshop alternatives exist, Photoshop remains at the forefront of image editing software. Although for many years Adobe’s ultra-powerful software was unavailable on Linux, it’s now easy to install.

Install Photoshop on Linux Using a VM

Install Photoshop on Linux Using Wine
Alternatively, you may run Adobe Photoshop on Linux using Wine and PlayOnLinux.
As Yassen Dadabhay reveals, Photoshop CC 2014 runs on Linux. However, CC 2015 does not. You can also run Adobe Photoshop CS4, CS6, and Lightroom 5 on Linux using Wine. Among the biggest challenges when switching from Windows to Linux is software compatibility.
What you’ll need:
- Wine (optional but recommended: PlayOnLinux front-end)
- Adobe CS4, CS6, or CC 2014
The easiest means to install Adobe Photoshop on Linux is using Wine plus the PlayOnLinux front-end. Wine is an open-source compatibility layer which allows certain Windows programs to run on Unix-like operating systems.
PlayOnLinux provides a pretty front-end for Wine, which makes software installation a breeze. Also worth noting is that you can use Wine to run Windows apps on macOS as well as on Android devices.

Download and Install PlayOnLinux

Install Photoshop Using PlayOnLinux
With PlayOnLinux installed, run the program. Next, select Install a program from the left-hand side of the screen or from the top menu.
Now, in the search bar look for Photoshop. You’ll find options for Adobe Photoshop CS4, CS6, and Lightroom 5. Choose Adobe Photoshop CS6. After that, select Install.
Once you hit Install, you’re prompted for a PlayOnLinux warning which appears before every PlayOnLinux install. Accept this and proceed. Now, the PlayOnLinux wizard installation wizard begins.
Eventually, PlayOnLinux asks for you to select the installation file. Locate this on your hard drive.
With your install file chosen, click Next.
Install Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 6
Now, PlayOnLinux creates a virtual drive and proceeds to install several items including Adobe Air. You may see a notification that Microsoft fonts are not installed. Check I agree and click Next.
When the installation completes, you’re ready to install the actual Photoshop program. You’ll see a notification that installation may fail.
If it does, wait a few minutes and try again. However, on my system, Adobe Photoshop on Linux installed flawlessly. After the initial set up, select either Install or Try if you don’t have the full version. Regardless, you’ll need to sign in with your Adobe ID. Once you’ve signed in, install Adobe Photoshop. Next, you’re ready to run Photoshop CS6 on Linux.
You’ve Now Installed Adobe Photoshop on Linux!
Despite the plentiful alternatives for Linux, Adobe Photoshop remains the top pick for its excellent layering. Additionally, for long-time Photoshop users it’s tough to find a program that maintains compatibility with previous Photoshop files. While I used Photoshop for many years, I attempted to replace it with GIMP. However, GNOME failed to properly load my layers.
Installing Photoshop on Linux remedied this issue.
Moreover, many of the best Photoshop replacements require payment. Therefore, if you’re going to pay it’s best to simply shell out money for the genuine Photoshop rather than a substitute. Since Photoshop CS6 comes as a one-time payment, it’s more economical than the Creative Cloud subscription.

At the time, I was running it on Windows XP; since XP's EOL (April 2014), I've been using Linux; firstly Ubuntu, then a year later (and currently), Puppy Linux.
I read an OMG! Ubuntu article 2-3 years ago, about how to install CS2 under WINE. At the time, there was a big fuss across the 'net, since Adobe had turned off the activation servers for CS2, and for a short period, it was freely available to download.....complete with activation key!
CS2 is the only version of Creative Suite to receive the coveted 'Platinum' rating from the guys at WineHQ, meaning it installs and runs flawlessly. I followed all the steps, including hunting down the necessary 'extras'.....and now have Adobe's Photoshop CS2 running in a kennel-full of Puppies. And it works as well as it ever did under XP..!!
I've always run CS2 alongside the GIMP, and am reasonably competent with both. Nowadays, I run the GIMP with a 'Photoshop' theme-pack from Dr. Mo over at DeviantArt, which makes it rather like Photoshop to work with.....
