In Columbia Pictures' The Karate Kid, 12-year-old Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) could've been the most popular kid in Detroit, but his mother's (Taraji P. Henson) latest career move has landed him in China. Dre immediately falls for his classmate Mei Ying - and the feeling is mutual - but cultural differences make such a friendship impossible. Even worse, Dre's feelings make an enemy of the class bully, Cheng. In the land of kung fu, Dre knows only a little karate, and Cheng puts 'the karate kid' on the floor with ease. With no friends in a strange land, Dre has nowhere to turn but maintenance man Mr. Han (Jackie Chan), who is secretly a master of kung fu. As Han teaches Dre that kung fu is not about punches and parries, but maturity and calm, Dre realizes that facing down the bullies will be the fight of his life.

Dre Parker (Jaden Smith) has moved to Beijing from Detroit with his Mum. He's sullen and moody and unhappy about the whole concept - refusing to learn mandarin or try and fit in.
It doesn't take long before Dre becomes a target of bullies who use kung fu to beat him up. Dre is lost, without a friend, when his apartment's maintenance man, the English-speaking Mr Han (Jackie Chan) rescues him from a beating and agrees to teach him the art of kung fu so Dre can defend himself.
Produced by Will Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and the China Film Group Corporation, The Karate Kid is a true mix of star vehicle for Jaden Smith (Will and Jada's son who gets top billing above Jackie Chan) and tourism brochure for China. There's been no expense spared with filming at The Forbidden City & The Great Wall of China and plenty of cash has been poured into the soundtrack with Lady Gaga, Justin Beiber and AC/DC featuring.
There's no getting around the fact that Jaden Smith is an 11 year old kid - it's weird seeing such a young boy with six pack abs getting involved in such aggressive violent fights. A better solution to his problems might be calling the police rather than learning how to punch as well as his attackers. His pre-pubescent love story is weird too - starting sweetly but a sequence where the two dance for each other is disturbing.
Jackie Chan is good as Mr Han, the right mix of funny, caring and serious. Not too big a stretch from any his previous films.
The Karate Kid is rated PG and lasts for 140 long minutes. The packed audience I saw it with yesterday seemed to enjoy it, but my heart will always lie with the 1984 original.
